How To

How to diagnose your vehicle properly for repair

You should first examine the symptoms your car is showing to determine if it requires repairs. You can then follow these steps for a proper diagnosis of your vehicle.

  1. Check engine lights. The dashboard light indicators, including the engine light, oil pressure gauge, battery light indicator, coolant temperature gauge and RPM gauge, should be checked. If they have been flashing for more days than usual, it could be a sign that something is wrong with the vehicle.
  2. Pay attention to the treads on your tires. Tires with worn treads could cause problems when handling or braking. The treads of the wheels should be inspected as well. They should be clean, and they should be smooth. You can do this by taking off the wheels. Check the tread condition with a flashlight.
  3. You should always monitor the level brake fluid. You must keep track on the level of brake fluid in your vehicle. This will ensure your brakes function properly. Low brake fluid levels can cause brake failure when you apply pressure.
  4. The suspension system should be tested. Vehicles usually have a suspension system that helps absorb shocks and vibrations while driving. It allows for better control, smooth acceleration, and deceleration. If your vehicle has a suspension problem, it might feel wobbly or shake uncontrollably. You can test if your vehicle has a suspension problem by putting weight on either the front or back axle to see how it moves.
  5. Examine the steering wheel. Steering columns are used to connect the steering wheel to the rest of the vehicle's components. Steering columns can be damaged by accidents. You should replace your steering column if it feels loose or unstable.
  6. Pay close attention to the exhaust tube. The exhaust pipes are responsible for moving gases from the combustion chamber into the atmosphere. If your exhaust pipe leaks or cracks, it will allow harmful fumes into your cabin. If your tailpipe bends, it is important to fix it immediately.
  7. Take a look under your hood. To check for unusualities, look under the hood. There could be fluid leaking from your engine. A professional technician should be contacted if your engine compartment emits an unusual smell.
  8. The air filter should be checked. The vehicle's outside environment may cause the air filter to collect dust and debris. A dirty filter can lead to a poor vehicle's performance. Replace your air filter regularly.
  9. Make sure you check the fan belt. The fan belt that connects your vehicle to the transmission is called the engine fan belt. If it breaks, the engine won't turn over. It is very easy to replace your belt. All you need are a screwdriver & pliers.
  10. Check the radiator hose and hoses. The radiatorhose carries water from your radiator to the engine. It can become cracked or damaged and leak hot liquid onto your engine. To repair the hose, you will only need to use a pair needle-nosepliers and a wire brush.
  11. Make sure you have the windshield wipers checked. Windshield wipers use electricity to clean away snow and rain. If they stop working, streaks could be left on your glass. The solution is to change the washer fluid.
  12. The battery cables should be checked. The battery cables provide power for the electrical systems in your car. Always disconnect the negative wire before you replace batteries. Failure to do so can damage your alternator.
  13. Be sure to check your headlights. Headlights are used to illuminate the road ahead. Poor visibility can result if the headlights don't function properly. To determine if your bulbs are out of date, check them.
  14. Pay attention to the lights. If you approach other drivers at night, lights will warn them. One that doesn't work could cause you to be distracted, and possibly lead to an injury.
  15. You should inspect your brakes. Before you have a collision, brakes slow down your car. You could lose control of the car and cause a crash if they don't work properly.
  16. Check the oil regularly. Keep your engine lubricated with oil. It prevents metal parts from rusting too quickly. Changing the oil every month is recommended.
