FAQ

What does it take for a mechanic to be a good one?

To become a skilled mechanic, you need years of experience and practice. The best way to learn how to repair cars is by working under the supervision of a professional mechanic.

You'll have to spend time at a garage learning all you can about cars and mechanics. Mechanical engineering books will be required to learn about mechanics and design.

Auto school is also required.

It's important to start early. It doesn't matter if you're old or not to study automotive technology. Start studying automotive technology now to become a mechanic.

How can I prepare for a apprenticeship as a mechanic?

Understanding what you're getting into is crucial. It is important to know the basics of how cars work. You will be able to know exactly where to begin when you arrive at the garage for your first day.

You also need to know how to fix simple problems such as broken lights, tires, etc.

This will teach you how to diagnose problems and fix them yourself.

For the purpose of putting them back together again, you'll need to be able to identify how each piece fits together.

And finally, you must know how to use tools safely and efficiently.

All of these factors will allow you to become a skilled mechanic.

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

You'll be ready for work once you have completed the training.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. After registering, you'll be required to meet certain standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

Customers will expect you to not only sell spare parts but also provide advice and guidance.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages are not associated with any one dealership. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

There are many jobs that can be switched between. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

How To

How to Become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must be able to diagnose problems and make repairs quickly, safely, accurately, and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. One section tests knowledge of mechanical components, while the other section tests skills in practical areas. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. And those with master's degrees made around $32,000 per year. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
